"According to legend, nougat was born in Cremona in 1441, during the sumptuous banquet which followed the marriage between Francesco Sforza and Bianca Maria Visconti. The latter brought the town of Cremona with her as a dowry. The bride and groom were offered a sweet made with honey, almonds and egg white, in the shape of Torrazzo, the thirteenth century tower which still today stands alongside the town?s cathedral, and from which the Italian word for nougat, Torrone, would seem to take its name. During the years that followed, this sweet was apparently prepared for some famous occasions, celebrations and parties, more and more related to Christmas time. What is certain, however, is that during the nineteenth century in Cremona many groceries and even chemists produced the nougat by hand. On of the most frequently mentioned and visited groceries was the one located in Porta Venezia where Secondo Vergani worked as a grocer?s boy. It was only 1881 that he acquired the shop where he had worked for so many years and created the company at the rear of the shop, devoting himself in particular to the production of nougat. In the ?20s of last century, Vergani reached a significant growth and in the ?30s became an industry, expanding its distribution in foreign markets. The company moved in wider premises in Via Decia near the house of the owner, acquired new equipments and the production hugely grew. In 1969, Vergani become SpA (joint-stock company) and in 1980 the new building was established near the motorway, exactly where the production is carried on with the unchanged enthusiasm of the old days.
